Ep. 116/Life After HA Recovery: Getting Your Period Back, Rebuilding Body Trust & Getting Pregnant Naturally
What happens after you get your period back?
Getting a period after hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) can feel like the ultimate finish line. But as Ali discovered, getting your cycle back is just the beginning.
Ali is back on The Period Recovery Podcast for her second episode—and this time, she has a very different story to tell. During Ali's first episode, she was navigating HA recovery as a personal trainer and struggling with the identity, anxiety, food rules, exercise expectations, and body image concerns that came with it.
Now, she has maintained regular menstrual cycles, gotten married, and is 38 weeks pregnant with her first baby.
In this conversation, we talk about what happens after period recovery: learning to trust your body, maintaining a healthy cycle, navigating body image, changing your relationship with exercise, and eventually becoming comfortable living without constantly trying to control your body.
Ali shares how she went from feeling shackled to hours of exercise and rigid food rules to becoming significantly stronger with a much more manageable approach to fitness.
We also talk about her wedding season, learning to navigate body image when getting fitted for a wedding dress, and how she continued to prioritize her health rather than trying to become the leanest version of herself.
Then we get into fertility.
After previously being told by multiple doctors that she might need IVF to become pregnant, Ali unexpectedly conceived naturally shortly after getting married.
Her story is a powerful reminder that hypothalamic amenorrhea can affect reproductive health—but that recovery can change what is possible.
Most importantly, this conversation goes beyond the physical side of recovery. We talk about the mental work of learning to trust yourself again, recognizing the intention behind your food and movement choices, and understanding that getting your period back doesn't automatically erase every fear or thought that came with HA.
Because the real goal isn't simply to get your period back.
The goal is to get your life back.
If you're recovering from hypothalamic amenorrhea, trying to maintain your period, struggling with exercise and food anxiety, or wondering what life can look like after recovery, this episode is for you.
